An invitation to digital “cloud gazing”: can you watch an artificial intelligence “thinking images” – or perhaps even “dreaming”?

This video installation opens up a creative field of experimentation in which productions from the last five seasons of the Volkstheater are digitally reinterpreted and further developed with the help of AI-supported tools. Based on reviews, dialog texts and descriptions, specially adapted AI language models independently generate fictional monologues and dialogues, which are then spoken by the original voices of the ensemble using voice cloning technologies. At the same time, AI image generation models learn the visual style of the productions and the actors‘ faces from extensive photo archives in order to recreate unique, unprecedented visual worlds and virtual scenes. These AI-generated images are animated with local image-to-video models, giving them a dynamic, cinematic quality. Complemented by soundscapes derived from the video material by separate AI models, the result is an immersive audiovisual synthesis of the arts that invites recipients to experience technical innovation up close and explore the boundaries between human and machine creativity in a new way.
